Start with the entire route rather than focusing on a single flight sale. Compare two or three date windows, include the cost of reaching and leaving each airport, and check whether using trains or alternative transport can reduce expensive flights or hotel nights.
Once the route is stable, book the items with the biggest price risk first: usually long-distance transport and limited lodging. Keep flexible reservations where the saving is small. The cheapest headline fare is not necessarily the cheapest complete trip.
