Oceania punishes optimistic maps more than most regions. The seasons are inverted against the northern calendar, the internal distances are long enough that overland travel stops being a realistic default, and the long-haul flight in and out usually consumes more of the trip than travellers allow for.
Decide early whether you are planning one country properly or two countries thinly. Adding a second usually costs a trans-Tasman flight, a second entry process and a day in each direction — which is most of a short trip’s slack.
Treat internal distance as a flight, not a drive
Australia is a country where the gap between two well-known cities can be a long-haul flight in its own right, so a four-city route is four flights plus the transfers either side. Build it as a small number of bases with day trips, not a continuous overland line. Sydney works well as a single arrival base precisely because it absorbs jet lag while still giving you a full trip.
New Zealand is the opposite shape: distances are drivable, but the two main islands need a ferry or a flight between them, and mountain and coastal roads take longer than their distances suggest. Our New Zealand itinerary and cost guide sets out what a realistic multi-stop route costs.
Plan for inverted seasons and border checks
Peak summer is December to February and winter is June to August, so the northern hemisphere’s shoulder months are not the region’s shoulder months. School holidays and the Christmas period also move domestic flight and accommodation demand sharply, which matters more here than in regions with year-round capacity.
Both Australia and New Zealand run strict biosecurity controls on arrival, with food, plant material and outdoor equipment subject to declaration and inspection. Declare rather than guess, and allow extra time at the first arrival airport — check the current rules with the relevant border agency before you fly.
