Colonial cities
- Mexico City — Museums, a historic center, and a food scene that regularly ranks among the best in the Americas; also hosting the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
- Oaxaca — Regional cuisine, textile and mezcal traditions, and a colonial center widely cited as one of the country’s most distinctive.
- Mérida — The Yucatán’s colonial capital: Spanish architecture, museums, and noticeably fewer tourists than the coast an hour away.
- Valladolid — A smaller Yucatán colonial town, positioned between Mérida and the coast, close to several cenotes and Chichén Itzá.
Pacific coast
- Puerto Vallarta — Beaches, galleries, and a walkable city center; the established Pacific base.
- Riviera Nayarit — The coastline north of Puerta Vallarta, including the quieter surf town of Punta Mita.
- Baja California Sur — Desert-meets-ocean landscapes, resort towns, and rock formations distinct from the rest of the country’s coastline.
Yucatán Peninsula & islands
- Tulum — Clifftop Mayan ruins and the cenote network inland; increasingly crowded, which shifts value toward visiting outside peak hours.
- Cozumel — An island off the Yucatán coast, considered one of the world’s top scuba diving destinations for its reef visibility.
- Isla Mujeres — A smaller island off Cancún with an underwater museum and calmer water than the mainland coast.
A safety note, not a scare
The U.S. State Department publishes state-by-state travel advisories for Mexico, and they vary significantly — popular tourist zones (Mexico City, Oaxaca, the Yucatán, Puerto Vallarta) carry lower advisory levels than some northern border states. Check the current advisory for the specific states on your route before booking, not the country as a whole; a blanket view of “is Mexico safe” misses that the real answer depends entirely on which part.
