The top places to visit in Namibia are Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, Etosha National Park, Twyfelfontein, Swakopmund, and the Fish River Canyon. Namibia recorded 1,257,093 tourist arrivals in 2024, up 45.5% on 2023 and close to 79% of the 2019 total, according to Environment, Forestry and Tourism Minister Indileni Daniel, launching the ministry’s Tourist Statistical Report 2024.
- Sossusvlei and Deadvlei — Sleep inside the park if you can: Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) promises guests at its Sossus Dune Lodge the dunes “before sunrise” and “until after sunset”. For Deadvlei, NWR’s Sesriem camp sells a shuttle listed as “2×4 to Deadvlei”. Its dead camelthorns, which NWR says were “carbon-dated as being between 500 and 600 years old”, stand on white clay below the dunes. The same park holds the Namib Sand Sea, listed by UNESCO in 2013 as the “only coastal desert that includes extensive dune fields influenced by fog”.
- Etosha National Park — Make Okaukuejo your base and keep your evenings free for its floodlit waterhole, where the Namibia Tourism Board says black rhino, lion and elephant can turn up after dark. The camp is only 17 km in from the southern gate. By day, drive the rim of the Etosha pan, a salt flat that fills almost a quarter of the park. The board calls Etosha the country’s “number-one tourist destination”, so book early.
- Twyfelfontein — Give the rock engravings a slow morning. They span “at least two millennia” of hunter-gatherer ritual, by UNESCO’s reckoning, and in 2007 they became Namibia’s first World Heritage Site. The Lion Man is a shaman transformed into a lion, according to the Bradshaw Foundation’s site report, and the giveaway is his feet: five toes on each paw, where a real lion has four.
- Swakopmund — Use the coast as a break from the long drives. The tourism board sells Swakopmund and neighbouring Walvis Bay as Namibia’s “adventures hub”, from quad biking and dune surfing to skydiving. Before you leave, ask Laidlaw Peringanda at the town’s small Genocide Museum about walking the cemetery with him. “Hundreds of small mounds” filled the back of the cemetery when SWI swissinfo.ch followed one of his cemetery tours, the graves of African forced labourers.
- Fish River Canyon — For a view of Africa’s largest canyon, almost 550 m deep in places, drive to the viewpoint near Hobas. Walking it takes four to five days, and the trail is open only from 1 May to 15 September and needs an NWR permit. In 2026, high water kept it shut until NWR reopened it on 17 July. Finish in the thermal pools at /Ai-/Ais, a name NWR translates as “burning water”.
Planning note
Gravel covers at least 80% of Namibia’s roads, and the tourism board advises drivers not to exceed 80 km/h on it; it still recommends travelling by car, with generous time for each leg. NWR puts Okaukuejo 774 km from Sossusvlei and its Sesriem camp 334 km from Windhoek, so treat Etosha and the dunes as separate legs. Etosha’s gates shift their hours every Monday: through October 2026, opening moves from 06:36 to 06:17 and closing from 18:54 to 19:02 (NWR schedule, PDF). Budget for park entrance and conservation fees too; NWR posts the current schedule as a download. Expect most rain between December and April, the main wet season.
