Thailand was Southeast Asia’s tourism leader in 2024 with 35.5 million international arrivals, per UN Tourism — close behind Japan for the region’s top spot. The country splits cleanly into a mainland circuit and an island circuit, which rarely work well combined into a single short trip.
Mainland
- Bangkok — The near-universal entry point and a destination in its own right: temples, markets, and a food scene most visitors underrate on time.
- Chiang Mai — Northern Thailand’s cultural base — ancient temples, the Yi Peng lantern festival, and access to national parks and ethical elephant sanctuaries.
- Ayutthaya — The Ayutthaya Historical Park, a former capital’s ruins, usually a day trip from Bangkok.
- Krabi — Southern mainland coast with limestone cliffs, caves, and access to over 150 islands along a roughly 150km coastline.
- Pattaya — The closest beach-and-nightlife destination to Bangkok, on the eastern Gulf coast.
Islands
- Phuket — Thailand’s largest island at 540 km², with beaches ranging from the busy Patong strip to the quieter Nai Harn.
- Koh Samui — The country’s second-largest island; Chaweng and Lamai are the developed resort beaches, contrasting with the quieter west coast.
- Phi Phi Islands — A compact island group between Phuket and the Malacca Strait, reachable as a day trip or overnight stay.
- Koh Phangan & Koh Tao — A quick ferry from Samui; Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, Koh Tao for diving.
- Koh Lipe — Marketed as the “Maldives of Thailand” for its white sand and snorkeling, and noticeably less developed than the other islands on this list.
Also worth knowing: the Trat islands near the Cambodian border — Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak — are gaining attention as a quieter alternative to the more established island circuit.
Planning note
Peak-season Thailand (roughly December through February) books out well in advance — travel guides consistently recommend confirming accommodations and inter-island transport at least eight weeks ahead, with December bookings ideally locked in by mid-October. Mainland and island legs rarely combine well in under 10 days once transfer time between them is accounted for.
