Quick answer

Do I need acclimatization days in the Andes?

Yes—Cusco (3,400m) and La Paz (3,600m) require 1–3 days of reduced activity to avoid altitude sickness, especially if arriving from sea level.

Arrive in lower-altitude cities first (Lima is at sea level) and spend 1–2 days there before flying to Cusco. In Cusco, rest your first day, avoid alcohol, and drink water.

Altitude sickness affects many people; symptoms include headaches and fatigue. Descent to lower altitude (Sacred Valley at 2,900m) often relieves symptoms within 24 hours.
